We are a full-service European auto repair shop with certified technicians that are experts in everything BMW. If you drive an older Beemer, you may end up with a faulty alternator that needs to be replaced. We can do that quickly and easily, so do not panic. Here are signs that your BMW’s alternator is a goner.

Accessory Trouble

Your Beemer may start to have problems with its accessories if the alternator is going bad. For example, it may take a long time for the windows to open or close or the power seats to adjust. You may also see that the USB charging ports no longer have any power.

Burning Wires

If you smell burning electricity in your BMW’s engine, the alternator could be overproducing power. This can happen when older alternators malfunction and produce more than 14.5 volts. Bring your Beemer to our shop right away if you smell anything burning.

Dead Battery

The alternator can also make it necessary to jump-start the BMW’s battery frequently to get the European automobile started. This is a sign that the alternator cannot produce enough power to charge the battery and keep it charged while it discharges.

Dim Lights

Another sign that your BMW’s alternator is dying is dim headlights, taillights, and interior lights. If the alternator is producing too much power, the lights will be brighter than normal. The lights may also flicker if the alternator is struggling to sustain power.

Frequent Stalling

You may find that your BMW has started to misfire and stall. This can be a sign that the alternator is not producing enough power for the spark plugs. The power is transmitted through the plug wires so the plugs produce sparks in the BMW’s combustion chamber.

Warning Light

A battery warning light on the BMW’s dashboard is the engine control module telling you that there’s an electrical problem. This electrical problem could be a malfunctioning alternator. We can determine the cause of the illuminated battery light and fix it.

Whining Noises

Finally, you may hear whining or grinding noises coming from the Beemer’s engine if the alternator is going bad. The alternator belt will start to whine or squeal if it is having problems. The alternator will grind or growl if the inside of it is wearing out.

Do not worry. As we mentioned above, we are BMW experts and we can help. Call our European auto repair shop today to schedule an appointment for your BMW if you are having problems that point to a failing alternator. Call us for any BMW problems.
